Dr. Galán has been invited to give a talk as part of the “Grand Challenges in Clinical Science” symposium that’s being hosted by the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science at the APS Annual Convention in May!

Dr. Galán and collaborators had a new paper accepted for publication in the Journal of Research on Adolescence! This manuscript describes an intersectional-contextual approach to racial trauma exposure risk and coping among Black youth. Stay tuned on our publications page!

Emily Satinsky and Dr. Galán’s abstract, “Egocentric Social Networks of Black Youth: Sources of Racial Socialization Messages,” has been accepted for an oral presentation at the International Network for Social Network Analysis (INSNA’s) Sunbelt 2022 conference in Cairns, Australia. Emily and Dr. Galán will travel to Australia together this July to present their research!

Dr. Galán is a Spring 2022 Faculty Fellow through the USC Center for Changing Families (CCF)! Despite some bad weather, she was recognized during a CCF social event at the Moreton Fig Patio on campus.
January 2022
Emily Satinsky received a USC Psychology Doctoral Research Grant Award! This grant will fund focus groups and cognitive interviews with Black adolescents to assess their perceptions of the social network interview guide that will be used in Project Support Net. Participant feedback will be used to adapt the study materials prior to quantitative data collection.
November 2021
Dr. Galán’s grant application submitted to the MADRES Center for Environmental Health Disparities has been recommended for funding through the MADRES Center and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities! The project, “Racial discrimination, mental health, and the attenuating role of Black youths’ egocentric racial socialization networks,” will assess the structure and quality of Black adolescents’ social support networks, as well as sources of racial socialization messages across these networks.

Dr. Galán’s grant application submitted to the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (SCCAP) has received funding through the Child Mental Health in Action (CMHA) mechanism! Her project, “Development and Validation of a Novel Measure of Race-Based Traumatic Stress in Racial and Ethnic Minoritized Youth,” will adapt the Race-Based Traumatic Stress Symptom Scale (RBTSSS) for use with youth samples. Congratulations Dr. Galán!

Dr. Galán and collaborators at the University of Michigan recently published a commentary in Infant and Child Development! In this paper, the authors provide psychoeducation about racial socialization, as well as practical strategies to be competent in initiating and leading these conversations with young children.
